He cannot break His promise!

Dear Friends, Have you ever considered the shock and devastation the disciples must have experienced when their hero, Savior and Messiah was brutally tortured and executed on Easter Friday?  They had seen Him perform never-before-seen miracles; they knew that no one could stand up to His responses to the questions His enemies presented to entrap Him; they had seen Him walk on water, and untouched, through mobs of angry people bent on killing Him.  He was the real thing and they knew it. And yet, not a single one of them understood why He suffered and died until after the shock and disappointment.  But with Easter Sunday something happened within their hearts and minds that transformed them and their understanding...

Can You Handle the Truth?

28% of Russians believe that man never walked on the moon.  4% of Americans are sure that Elvis is still alive. Hmmm….   What happens if you don’t want to hear the truth?   And how would things change in the world if you have came to appreciate half-truths and made-up facts more than the real things because you prefer those half truths?  What would result if you surrounded yourself with people that enjoy the same illusions?  The truth is, belief in the absurd or fanciful will not change anything. What is true would still be true and what is a lie would remain a lie. Sorry Elvis and Putin.   The truth might “set me free”, but illusions...

Living by faith...

Dear Friends What can I do to make myself look better, wittier, funnier, and wiser than the others in the room?  How can I protect myself from every being embarrassed or find a way to always place the fault away from myself?  How can I procrastinate long enough to  get the best or easiest job?  What can I do to make people envy me? Those seem to be the questions on the minds of my young boys most of the day.  And my greatest challenge is to teach them that they have it all backwards—-no matter what the NFL, NBA, Avengers, Spider Man, our most out spoken politicians and their best friends at school say. And what can I tell...

On capitalism.....

The danger of success….   If you listen to the political discourse going on right now (and how can you ignore it?), it has a lot to do with those that are arguing on the merits of socialism.  It’s amazing to me to even hear the suggestion that socialism would work based upon the historical failure of it over the past 100 years.  It’s been said that, "The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries." -- Winston Churchill.   Regardless of what some pine for, our present society is geared towards capitalism. And I whereas we could all argue that capitalism has many faults,...

A time even to die…….

Dear Friends, In Ecclesiastes, Solomon talked a lot about topic like looking for purpose in life, inevitability of death, and that most of our ministries, careers and enterprises , will be short-lived and not remembered after we’re gone.   Few of us will do things that will cause us to be celebrated in a history book a hundred years hence. We’d be blessed to be found in a footnote!  While it is true that a few notables leave their historical   impressions for several generations, usually that is not the case. You can walk through the cemeteries of any city and see row after row of headstones which mark the graves of forgotten people. The epitaph on many a gravestone...
