Because he loves me I will rescue him…
Those are God’s word to the Psalmist in Psalm 91. If you read the entire Psalm (91) you get this overwhelming sense of God’s covering and protection for “those that love Him”. The more I read the Word, the more I see the connection between love, obedience… and the by-product of faith. Is my faith lacking? Then so is my obedience! Is my obedience lacking? Then the focus upon the Lover of my soul has been distracted.
Why do we obey Him? Either because we fear Him or we love Him. And whereas fear might be a good starting point, as we progress in our relationship with God we obey Him because we love Him!!! And that seems to be the point where He begins to lavish upon us His blessings and causes our faith in increase.
Why do I love Him? Precisely because He first loved me and existentially, “Thou hast created us for Thyself, and our heart is not quiet until it rests in Thee”. (Saint Augustine).
There is not other means of finding purpose, fulfillment, and the full expression of love outside of God! He is the source. At the center of life is His love for me and my life’s adventure is a response to that love!
Obedience comes quite easy as I remain in love with Him. Saint Ignatius said that, “It is not hard to obey when we love the one whom we obey.”
Do we talk enough about being in love with Him, being totally covered by Him and yearning for the day when He will say, “Well done!”.
