“He (God) took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.” Genesis 15:5-6
Abraham’s heart was downcast because he had no children and no one to whom he could pass his inheritance; he and his wife were “barren—too old to have children, and so he cried out to God. But what a word of encouragement came back from God! “Look up at the sky and count the stars—that’s how many children, grandchildren and offspring you will have one day!” Abraham was an obedient servant and God is a dependable Redeemer. Two important things to remember.
And what a man of faith Abraham was. As old as he was, Abram (Abraham) believed God even though it was ridiculous to imagine that an old man and old woman could have a baby. God said it——Abram believed it. That’s how it’s supposed to be.
Has He taken you outside, shown you the heavens, reminded you that He is able to do more than you can imagine? Do you know that He can use you, regardless of your age, color, gender, and gifts — to perhaps change the course of the world? And if He has spoken to you, do you believe that He is able to bring about what He promised? We don’t know how many men or women God called to do great things, just like Abraham, but I am of the opinion that many would not listen to God or did not trust Him. The Bible is record of the many that did trust Him and the incredible things they accomplished in His name.
The enemy will do everything he can to make me give up, resist, doubt and walk away from God’s promises to me. I have to listen to God and allow Him to call me outside to gaze at the stars —just as Abraham did. Then I have to hold on, against the wisdom or common thinking of the times and trust Him! I can’t let the Hagars, the Ishmaels or even the command to sacrifice my first born to deter my determination to believe in the Lord!
