“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:13
Towards the end of the most famous prayer in human existence Jesus reminds us that we are in a fight with evil. It is not the temptation, of course, that represents sin—-Jesus Himself was tempted on more than one occasion. But temptation leads to spiritual failure. Eventually, if you place yourself in tempting situations, you will eventually give in and be defeated.
I don’t know how many times the serpent tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, but eventually it worked. It would have been better to have kept away from that part of the garden in the first place!
The best way to avoid evil? Keep away from temptation. That might include certain people, certain websites, certain stores in the mall and certain types of daydreaming!
Pray that God shields you from being tempted in the first place! Jesus understood that we are frail creatures that are easily persuaded to do the dumbest things! That’s why he referred to us as lamb and sheep! No one that raises sheep could hate a lamb—-but they’re stupid! And that’s what I am when I get close to something that is tempting me—-I get stupid!
What helps me are these three things:
1. I pray that God directs away paths AWAY from temptation!
2. I try to be so full of that which is good and holy and pleasing to God that there is simply no room for the garbage of the enemy
3 I try to have people in my life that can be wise when I am thinking about doing something stupid.
