BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS, FOR THEY SHALL BE FILLED
.. a plea for satisfaction…
..a description of folks that have a PASSION for what is right
..encouragement for those that want justice, fairness and equality
Those of us who hunger and thirst for what is right get ANGRY over injustice to others, unkindness to the small or weak and attacks on those that are incapable of defending themselves.
To make this more appropriate for camp, you might say that “blessed” are those that stand up to the bully in the cabin, or stops the staff that gets a second cookie when some campers haven’t gotten their first, or is impatient when cheating in a game—even if his team is the one cheating——and winning.
It’s easy to dismiss the teachings of Jesus as being more appropriate for those dreaming of an ideal that is totally impractical. But Jesus was not simply blowing smoke. He meant what He said. “Hurray for those who are passionate and determined to do all they can to make the world a better place by standing up to the bully, rebuking those that are deliberately offensive and calling things wrong that are clearly wrong!”
If you thirst and hunger for these things be encouraged, you’re going to be satisfied—-partially in this life and totally in the next!
My ability to yearn for what is right is a sure sign that I am growing closer to Him; my complicity in what is patently wrong is a sure sign that I do not know Him well at all.
